How Many Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) Users Experience Significant Corneal Staining or Discomfort?
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) is a highly specialized treatment that uses rigid lenses overnight to reshape the cornea. Clinical studies on Ortho-K safety indicate that approximately 10 percent to 15 percent of users experience mild to moderate corneal staining during their initial fitting period. Corneal staining is the medical term for microscopic abrasions on the eye surface that appear during a clinical exam. While most cases are asymptomatic and resolve with a fit adjustment, significant discomfort is reported by fewer than 5 percent of long term users who have achieved a stable fit.
