How Long Does a Kinetic Visual Field Test Take?
A kinetic visual field test usually takes about 5 to 20 minutes, depending on whether one or both eyes are tested, how detailed the field map needs to be, and whether the test is manual or automated. In kinetic perimetry, the light stimulus is moved from an area where the patient can't see it into an area where they can, often at about 2 to 4 degrees per second, and the patient responds when the light first appears. Automated kinetic studies have reported test times around 6 to 12 minutes per eye, while one peripheral kinetic perimetry study found a median test time of about 71 seconds for a shorter peripheral protocol. A more detailed kinetic field exam can take longer, with some clinical sources giving an estimate of around 20 minutes for completion. In practice, the appointment may also include setup time, instructions, and repeat testing if the first results aren't reliable.
