What Is the Cover Test?
The Cover Test is the single most important objective examination used in optometry and ophthalmology to detect strabismus, which is an eye turn or misalignment. While other tests rely on reflections or patient feedback, the Cover Test allows the doctor to directly observe the movement of the eye to determine if the eyes are working together or independently. It relies on the fixation reflex. If a patient looks at a target and one eye is covered, the other eye must be pointing directly at the target to see it. If the uncovered eye has to move to find the target, it proves that the eye was not aligned correctly to begin with.
