How the Test Is Performed

The procedure for the drop ball test is very simple and specific. A small steel ball, about 5/8 of an inch in diameter, is dropped from a height of 50 inches onto the surface of the lens. To pass the test, the lens must not chip, crack, or break. This process confirms that the lens meets the FDA's minimum standard for impact resistance.

The FDA Safety Standard

Since 1972, the FDA has required that almost all lenses sold in the United States must be impact-resistant. The drop ball test is the official method for verifying this. It is important to know that "impact-resistant" does not mean "shatterproof." Lenses can still break if hit with enough force, but this standard ensures they will not break from a small, light impact.

Lens Materials and Durability

Different lens materials have different natural strengths. Glass lenses must be specially hardened with a heat or chemical treatment to be able to pass the drop ball test. Standard plastic lenses are naturally more impact-resistant. Materials like polycarbonate and Trivex are so strong that they pass the test easily. These are the materials of choice for children's eyewear and safety glasses.

The Reason for the Rule

Before 1972, many eyeglass lenses were made of thin, brittle glass that could shatter into dangerous shards if hit. The FDA implemented the drop ball test mandate in response to a high number of eye injuries caused by broken glasses. This regulation effectively forced the optical industry to switch to safer manufacturing methods, such as heat-tempering glass or switching to naturally impact-resistant plastics, drastically reducing eye injuries in the decades since.

FAQs on the Lens Drop Ball Test

Does this mean my glasses are safety glasses?

No. Standard eyeglasses that pass this test are not considered safety glasses. To be rated as safety glasses, the lenses and the frame must both pass much tougher, high-impact standards set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

Is every single lens in the U.S. tested this way?

Every prescription glass lens is tested individually. For plastic lenses, the FDA allows for batch testing, where a statistically significant number of lenses from a large batch are tested to ensure the quality of the entire batch.

Do contact lenses have to pass this test?

No. The drop ball test requirement is only for eyeglass and sunglass lenses, not for soft or hard contact lenses.
