What Is Newborn Eye Screening?
Newborn eye screening is a mandatory medical evaluation performed within the first few hours or days of a baby's life to detect serious, potentially life-threatening ocular conditions. Unlike a vision test for an adult, this screening is designed to look for "anatomical" defects that could prevent the brain from ever learning how to see. The primary tool used is an "ophthalmoscope" to check for the "red reflex," ensuring that light can pass through the eye to the retina without being blocked by a tumor or a cloud. Catching these issues in the first week of life is the only way to prevent permanent blindness and, in the case of certain eye cancers, to save the child's life.
