What Is a Thiazide Diuretic?
A thiazide diuretic is a medicine that increases the kidneys' removal of sodium and water. It acts mainly in the distal convoluted tubule of the nephron. Thiazides are widely used to lower blood pressure and can also reduce selected forms of fluid retention. Examples include hydrochlorothiazide and chlorothiazide, while chlorthalidone and indapamide are commonly described as thiazide-like diuretics.
