What Is a Serotonin Antagonist?
A serotonin antagonist is a medicine or substance that binds to one or more serotonin receptors and reduces activation by serotonin or another agonist. Serotonin receptors are divided into several families with different functions throughout the brain and body. Blocking one receptor subtype can produce a very different effect from blocking another. Examples include 5-HT3 antagonists used for nausea and medicines that antagonize selected 5-HT2 receptors.
