What Is a Radiopaque Contrast Agent?
A radiopaque contrast agent is a material that absorbs or attenuates X-rays more strongly than nearby tissues, making selected structures appear brighter on radiographs or computed tomography scans. Common examples include iodine-containing contrast agents and barium sulfate preparations. The term does not include every imaging contrast agent because magnetic resonance and ultrasound products work through different physical mechanisms.
