What Is a Potassium-Sparing Diuretic?
A potassium-sparing diuretic is a medicine that increases sodium and water excretion while reducing potassium loss in urine. These drugs act in the later parts of the nephron, particularly the distal tubule and collecting duct. Their diuretic effect is usually weaker than that of loop or thiazide diuretics. Examples include amiloride, triamterene, spironolactone, and eplerenone.
