What Is a Mucolytic Agent?
A mucolytic agent is a medicine that reduces the thickness or stickiness of mucus so it can be cleared more easily. Different mucolytics break chemical bonds, digest extracellular material, or otherwise change the physical properties of airway secretions. They are used as part of airway-clearance treatment rather than as substitutes for treating the underlying disease. Common examples include inhaled acetylcysteine and dornase alfa.
