How Strong Is a Kevlar Sports Retainer Strap?
A Kevlar sports retainer strap is designed to hold glasses securely during running, cycling, court sports, and other activities where ordinary eyewear cords may stretch, fray, or snap. Kevlar yarn itself has a typical tensile strength of about 424,000 to 435,000 psi, or roughly 2.92 to 3.00 gigapascals, depending on the fiber grade. Laboratory data for specific Kevlar yarn samples also show breaking loads of approximately 59 to 76 pounds, even though the yarn weighs far less than steel with a density of only about 1.44 grams per cubic centimeter. Kevlar generally stretches only about 2.4% to 3.6% before breaking, which helps a retainer remain firm rather than becoming excessively elastic during sudden movement. However, these numbers describe industrial Kevlar yarn rather than a finished eyewear strap, so the strap's actual strength will also depend on its thickness, weave, attachment loops, stitching, adjuster, and the percentage of Kevlar used in the material.
