The Role of Rods and Cones

Adaptation happens in two distinct stages. The cones (used for color and detail) adapt quickly, usually within 5 to 7 minutes, but they are not very sensitive to dim light. The rods (used for black and white night vision) take over after the cones stop working. This transition point, where the rods become more sensitive than the cones, is called the "rod-cone break." Why does it hurt to turn on the light?

When your eyes are dark-adapted, your pupils are wide open and your photoreceptors are highly sensitive. Turning on a bright light floods the retina with too much energy at once, causing a temporary overload signal that the brain registers as pain.

Do blue eyes see better in the dark?

Generally, no. While lighter irises let slightly more light into the eye than dark irises, the difference is negligible for night vision. Visual sensitivity is determined by the retina, not the iris color.

Can I speed up the process?

You cannot speed up the chemical regeneration of rhodopsin. Keeping one eye closed when moving from light to dark (like a pirate patch) can preserve the adaptation in that one eye, but the chemical timer is fixed by biology.
