How Long Does It Take for Eyes to Adapt to Darkness?
The human eye requires approximately 20 to 40 minutes to fully adapt to total darkness. While the pupil dilates within seconds to let in more light, the chemical changes required for true night vision are much slower. Most people achieve about 80% of their dark adaptation within the first 10 minutes, but maximum sensitivity is not reached until the 30 to 45-minute mark.
